District Mayor Clara Herrmann Not Running - Berlin's Green Party leader Clara Herrmann steps down after 25 years in politics
Clara Herrmann, the 40-year-old district mayor of Berlin's Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, has announced she will not seek re-election in September. After nearly a decade in local government and 25 years with the Green Party, she now plans to pursue new challenges in her life.
Herrmann first joined Berlin's state parliament as a Green Party representative in 2006, serving there until 2016. She later took on leadership of the district administration in 2021, where she focused on social, cultural, and climate initiatives.
During her time in office, she secured €197,000 for artistic and sociocultural projects in 2026. She also pushed forward the Kotti räumt auf campaign, aimed at improving cleanliness around Kottbusser Tor, with a 12-point action plan due by late 2025. Another key project was the climate-neutral heat supply scheme for the area, funded by KfW and developed with housing association HOWOGE.
The Green Party faction in the district assembly responded with respect for her decision but expressed deep regret at her departure. Herrmann, a mother of two, has been a driving force in making the borough more diverse, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
Herrmann's exit marks the end of a long political career, spanning nearly a quarter of a century. Her work on cultural funding, urban cleanliness, and climate projects will continue shaping Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The district will now prepare for a new mayor in the upcoming September election.
