Berlin’s Haus der Statistik nears completion as a model of urban renewal
Berlin-Mitte’s Haus der Statistik quarter is nearing the final phase of its transformation into a bustling urban air hub. The last major piece, the 'Town Hall of the Future,' has been awarded to Dresden-based architects Schmelzer und Weber after a competitive two-phase design process. This ambitious project, costing between €250 and €350 million, aims to blend housing, culture, and civic services in a single district.
The Haus der Statistik site, once a long-vacant GDR-era complex, has become a model for collaborative urban renewal. Five key partners are repurposing the area, with House A—the iconic slab high-rise—now nearly complete. Around 50 civil society groups will occupy this building, offering spaces for art, education, social projects, and local businesses. Some tenants have already moved in.
The Haus der Statistik quarter represents a decade-long effort to reimagine urban space through cooperation. Once finished, it will provide housing, civic services, and cultural venues in one central location. The district’s completion will mark a significant shift in how Berlin develops mixed-use public areas.
