Berlin’s historic L’Aiglon may soon become a vibrant House of Jazz
Berlin’s long-awaited House of Jazz is now closer to becoming a reality. After years of discussions, a financial plan has been proposed to turn the vacant L’Aiglon building into a dedicated jazz venue. Officials are working to secure funding and finalise the project’s future location.
The proposed site for the House of Jazz is the former L’Aiglon, a long-empty cinema and theatre at Kurt-Schumacher-Damm 121. The main building remains in good condition, featuring a 350-seat auditorium as its centrepiece. State-owned property manager BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement is overseeing the process.
To fund the project, €11.5 million from the Alte Münze budget may be reallocated. Senator for Culture Sara Wedl-Wilson has outlined the financial steps needed, while Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) is involved in the negotiations. However, the final decision rests with the main committee of Berlin’s House of Representatives. The project has gained fresh momentum as existing funds are repurposed. If approved, the House of Jazz could soon transform the historic L’Aiglon into a vibrant cultural space.
The next step depends on the House of Representatives’ approval of the budget reallocation. If successful, the €11.5 million will fund the conversion of L’Aiglon into a permanent jazz venue. The project would finally give Berlin a dedicated home for jazz performances after years of planning.
