Berlin’s Hohenschönhausen Nord braces for months of traffic chaos in 2026
Major traffic disruptions are set to return to Hohenschönhausen Nord next year. From March 2 to July 26, 2026, BVG will carry out further construction on Hansastraße, replacing the M4 tram line with buses. The work follows an earlier phase that ended in late November, but fresh delays are already expected.
The latest round of construction will again affect traffic flow in the area. The Berlin Senate has admitted that disruptions are hard to avoid without a central coordinator to manage communication between stakeholders. Previously, sudden roadwork changes caused gridlock and longer travel times for commuters.
BVG informed around 3,600 nearby households about the upcoming work in September 2025. However, many regular commuters received no advance warning. The district office also confirmed it had not assessed the impact on bus services or overall traffic before the project began.
No single authority has taken responsibility for the traffic restrictions or for planning replacement services for the M4 line. The lack of coordination has left commuters uncertain about alternative routes during the four-month closure.
The construction will run until late July 2026, with buses replacing the M4 tram line. Residents and commuters face another period of delays, as no central body oversees traffic management. Without better planning, similar disruptions could continue in future projects.
