Berlin’s Howoge plans new housing quarter on Gehrenseestraße to ease rental crisis
Berlin-based housing association Howoge is exploring a new development on Gehrenseestraße in Alt-Hohenschönhausen. The project, currently in early planning, could bring multi-family homes to the underused parking area, aiming to ease the city's rental market pressure.
The proposed site, near the Gartenstadt Hohenschöhnausen garden city, benefits from strong infrastructure, including the nearby Gehrenseestraße S-Bahn station. This station offers a direct link to Alexanderplatz, with a journey time of around 30 minutes.
Howoge is considering the Lilienthal Quarter in Berlin-Mitte as a potential model for the Gehrenseestraße development. The Lilienthal Quarter comprises 102 rental apartments and 8,000 square meters of commercial space, demonstrating a mix of residential and commercial use that could be replicated.
While no concrete plans or timeline have been announced, Howoge's consideration of the Gehrenseestraße site for multi-family housing is a step towards addressing Berlin's rental market needs. If the Lilienthal Quarter model is followed, the development could bring socially diverse housing to the area.
