Berlin's Iconic Karstadt Building Reborn as Southlight Tempelhof by 2026
The former Karstadt building in Berlin-Tempelhof is being transformed into a modern retail and residential space called Southlight Tempelhof. Woolworth has signed on as a major tenant, taking over 2,600 square meters on the first floor. The store is set to open on April 30, 2026, becoming one of the chain's largest in Europe.
The redevelopment covers roughly 10,000 square meters across six above-ground floors. Around 70 apartments will occupy the upper levels, with tenants expected to move in by the end of 2027. The lower floors will house retail, including Woolworth and Lidl as anchor tenants.
Modernisation work includes redesigning escalator areas and improving wayfinding. The building also keeps strong transport links, featuring a two-level underground car park and direct access to the U6 subway line. So far, about 9,000 square meters of the former department store's space has been relet. The future of the nearby existing Woolworth branch remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the upper floors offer flexible, bright space for potential future uses.
Woolworth's new store will open in late April 2026, marking a key step in the building's revival. The redevelopment combines retail, residential units, and improved infrastructure. Once complete, Southlight Tempelhof will serve as a major hub in the area.
