Berlin's Kai Wegner Vows to Keep City on 'Reasonable' Course After Landslide Victory
Berlin's Governing Mayor and CDU state chairman, Kai Wegner, has outlined his vision for the city's future. He aims to keep Berlin on a 'reasonable' course under a CDU-led Senate, following his re-election with a majority of over 89.8 percent. Wegner has also expressed concerns about the radicalization of the Left Party and ruled out cooperation with the AfD and Left after the next United States election.
Wegner has criticized the current Red-Red-Green coalition, stating that it has made Berlin dysfunctional. However, he acknowledged that progress has been made since then. Looking ahead, he plans to hold talks with the SPD to accelerate public procurement law and strengthen tenant protection. He also ruled out expropriations but insisted on building apartments on Tempelhofer Field.
In response to the 'Berlin car-free' initiative, Wegner criticized the idea and ruled out a ban on individual car traffic within the S-Bahn ring. He warned that Berlin would 'fall back' if not governed from the center in the future.
Wegner, the likely top candidate for the CDU in the 2026 Berlin state election, has made his intentions clear. He aims to continue leading the Senate, keeping Berlin on a course of reason and addressing issues such as housing, public procurement, and traffic management. His re-election as CDU state chairman with a strong majority signals his party's support for his leadership.
