Berlin’s Klang Games fights for survival as SEED’s seven-year gamble nears its final test

Berlin-based game developer Klang Games is facing a critical year with its persistent online world game, SEED, still in development after seven years. The studio's financial situation is precarious, with accumulated losses and dwindling cash reserves.

Klang Games, founded in 2015, has been working on its sole project, SEED, since then. The game features a unique mechanic where players' avatars persist offline, requiring repurchase upon lifespan expiry. Despite its innovative concept, SEED has yet to generate significant revenue.

The studio's financial struggles are evident. Since 2020, Klang Games has amassed losses exceeding €53 million, with projected losses of €16 million for 2025. Its cash reserves have halved in 2024, from €32 million to €18.3 million, with a monthly 'burn rate' of €1.1 million. The studio has an average headcount of 96 employees, similar to established Berlin studios.

Klang Games' online presence is low, with only a few thousand followers on its official social media accounts. The competition in the same genre includes inZOI by Krafton and the upcoming Paralives, adding to the challenge.

A closed beta test for SEED is currently underway, aiming to generate revenue for the first time. However, the 2025 forecast for Klang Games states that 'The coming year will be make-or-break for Klang.'

Klang Games' future hangs in the balance as it enters a critical year. The success of SEED's closed beta test and the studio's ability to adapt to market demands will determine its survival. Despite the challenges, Klang Games remains committed to its unique vision for persistent online worlds.
