Thousands of new trees for Berlin: Discussion gains momentum - Berlin's Leaders Back BaumEntscheid Initiative, Key Vote Set for October 9
Berlin's governing coalition leaders, Dirk Stettner (CDU) and Raed Saleh (SPD), have shown support for the BaumEntscheid initiative's goals. They plan to adopt the draft law in key areas and join a working group to finalise details by November 3, when the law is set to pass in a special House of Representatives session.
The House of Representatives has until November 3 to decide on the bill, with a vote scheduled for October 9. The initiative, aiming to protect Berliners from climate change, submitted its proposal in early July, only to be rejected by the Senate. If the parliament fails to adopt the bill, the initiative could launch a popular petition starting December, potentially leading to a vote on the bill in September 2026.
Stettner and Saleh back the initiative's goals but want to clarify financial aspects. Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) also supports the initiative, pushing for a law that is practical, affordable, and sustainable. The Greens in the state parliament urge the government coalition to fully agree to the bill without alterations. The debate over the initiative's proposal for tens of thousands of new trees and more green spaces in Berlin is intensifying. Initially, the initiative estimated costs of €7.2 billion for the 2026 to 2040 period.
The BaumEntscheid initiative's future depends on the House of Representatives' decision by November 3. If the bill passes, it will significantly impact Berlin's green spaces and climate change mitigation strategies. If not, a popular petition could lead to a vote in 2026.
