Berlin’s Lichtenberg district gets a green makeover with Vulkanstraße’s urban renewal

Berlin's Lichtenberg district is transforming with a new urban development along Vulkanstraße. The project, led by ksg and Schaar Landscape Architects, aims to create a modern residential area with around 800 homes and a continuous green corridor.

The Vulkanstraße project is part of a larger urban renewal initiative around Fennpfuhl. It involves reinterpreting the 1970s-era housing estate structure in a contemporary way, removing large sealed parking lots. The design competition, held from March to October 2025, will serve as the foundation for developing a master plan for the district.

Local residents played a significant role in the planning process. Their ideas were incorporated into the competition brief, ensuring the project reflects the community's needs and desires. This inclusive approach is a testament to the city's commitment to involving residents in urban development.

The new urban district along Vulkanstraße is set to reshape Berlin-Lichtenberg, offering modern homes and green spaces connected by a continuous corridor. The project, driven by resident involvement and innovative design, is part of a broader urban renewal effort in the Fennpfuhl area.
