Berlin’s Lichtenberg district unveils bold climate-adapted neighbourhood hub
Lichtenberg district is moving forward with plans for a major new neighbourhood hub in Neu-Hohenschönhausen. The development will centre around Hohenschönhausen Station, blending housing, commerce, culture, and green spaces. A striking 85-metre-high tower is set to become the area’s landmark, while a boulevard along Wartenberger Straße will form its core.
The project follows a masterplan created after a two-phase competition won by two Austrian design firms. Studio Boden, one of the winners, is leading the open-space and climate adaptation elements. Their plans include rainwater retention systems, green roofs, and new parks to improve resilience against climate change.
The Neu-Hohenschönhausen hub aims to transform the area around Hohenschönhausen Station into a vibrant, climate-adapted neighbourhood. With housing, green spaces, and cultural facilities, the project will depend on funding agreements and regulatory approvals. The district’s next steps include launching the zoning procedure and engaging the public in the planning process.
