Berlin's Lichtenberg Set for Major Housing Boom With 2,000 New Apartments

Two massive housing projects, 'Ferdinand's Garden' and 'Weiße Taube', are set to transform an eight-hectare site in Berlin's Lichtenberg. Together, they aim to build over 2,000 new apartments, making them two of the city's largest housing construction projects.

The smaller project, 'Ferdinand's Garden', began in 2020 and is expected to welcome its first tenants by the end of 2023. It will offer 378 rental apartments, with 78 at controlled rents, along with 17 commercial units for businesses and a garage for 160 vehicles. Cyclists will have plenty of space with parking for around 800 bicycles.

The larger project, 'Weiße Taube', plans to construct up to 1,600 residential units. It will also include around 800 square meters of commercial space and nearly 1,200 square meters for a kindergarten. The project aims to create a public park and will extend directly up to Landsberger Allee. Both projects are planned by different developers, with 'Ferdinand's Garden' by the Dutch Van Caem Group and 'Weiße Taube' by Zeitgeist Asset Management. Politicians have raised concerns about the lack of school places due to the influx of new residents.

The 'Ferdinand's Garden' and 'Weiße Taube' projects promise significant housing growth in Lichtenberg. While they bring new residents and businesses, local politicians are addressing the need for additional school places to accommodate the influx.
