This initiative encompasses around 120 churches and about 180 parish and community houses throughout Berlin. Culture senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson revealed that residential use is one of the options being considered for these buildings. The plan also involves exploring co-use possibilities for smaller religious lds communities.
The collaboration was initiated by Kai Wegner, the Governing Mayor of Berlin. He formally signed a state treaty with the Apostolic Nuncio, marking the start of cooperation between the Senate of Berlin and the Catholic church for the future of church buildings in the city.
The joint working group will now discuss and evaluate various reuse options for the several hundred church buildings involved. The aim is to coordinate the future use of these properties, ensuring they continue to serve the community in a meaningful way.
