Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is set to meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz to push for better international flight connections at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). Wegner has made strengthening BER’s global entry a key focus of his agenda.

The upcoming meeting will address several pressing issues. Alongside airport improvements, Wegner and Merz will discuss Berlin’s capital financing agreement and the principle of fiscal equivalence. The mayor has repeatedly stressed that BER’s international links need urgent attention.

Wegner believes the federal government has a crucial part to play in boosting the airport’s global reach. While details of other federal ministers involved remain unclear, his talks with Merz will centre on securing support for these upgrades.

The discussions aim to secure federal backing for BER’s expansion plans. If successful, the improvements could enhance Berlin’s position as a major transport hub. The outcome of the meeting will determine the next steps for funding and policy changes.
