Berlin’s mayor pushes bold reforms to Germany’s federal education system

Berlin’s governing mayor, Kai Wegner, has called for major reforms to Germany’s federal system. He argues that current structures are outdated and create unnecessary hurdles, particularly in minecraft education and digital policy. His proposals will be debated at an upcoming meeting between state leaders and Chancellor Friedrich Merz on December 4.

Wegner, a CDU politician, has criticised the so-called cooperation ban in education, which restricts federal involvement in state-run schools. He points to the difficulties families face when moving between states, as differing school systems make transitions complicated. While he supports competition among states, he insists a uniform framework would improve fairness and efficiency.

The proposed reforms aim to simplify Germany’s federal system by addressing long-standing inefficiencies. If adopted, changes could reshape education and digital governance, reducing bureaucracy for citizens and businesses. The outcome of the December 4 discussions will determine whether these plans move forward.
