Berlin’s Michaelkirchplatz to Become a Greener, Climate-Resilient Hub by 2026
Berlin-Mitte’s Northern Luisenstadt district is undergoing a major renewal to improve access to the Spree River and upgrade public spaces. The latest phase focuses on Michaelkirchplatz and Michaelkirchstraße, where a €380,000 redesign will introduce greener, safer streets and a more climate-resilient square by mid-2026.
The project follows the 2022 Michaelkirchstraße Development Concept, created by the Bezirksamt Mitte von Berlin. Its goal is to transform the northern area of Michaelkirchplatz into a community hub while addressing climate challenges. The redesign includes narrower roadways, additional trees, and better cycling and pedestrian routes along Michaelkirchstraße.
Hexagonal Square will be the first area to change. Modal filters will limit through traffic, and new green spaces will replace asphalt surfaces. The square will be divided into active and quieter zones, with expanded tree pits and flower beds to absorb rainwater—part of Berlin’s broader 'sponge city' strategy. By the second quarter of 2026, the open-space structure along Michaelkirchstraße will be restructured. The updates aim to make the area more inviting while supporting climate adaptation through increased greenery and improved water management.
The €380,000 redesign will reshape Michaelkirchplatz and its surroundings by mid-2026. New trees, pedestrian-friendly paths, and rainwater-absorbing green spaces will replace asphalt, aligning with Berlin’s climate goals. The project also seeks to create a more connected and safer environment for residents and visitors.
