Berlin's Mitte Makes Friedrichstraße a Permanent Pedestrian Zone
Berlin's Mitte district is set to transform Friedrichstraße in Berlin-Mitte into a permanent pedestrian zone starting next Monday. The district administration is finalizing the withdrawal procedure by tomorrow, Friday.
The project will be officially presented by Green Party members Bettina Jarasch and Almuth Neumann on Wednesday. Jarasch envisions Friedrichstraße becoming an appealing 'piazza' similar to those in Italy. The Berlin district administration of Mitte is overseeing the planning and implementation, which falls under urban development and traffic planning in Berlin-Mitte.
To create an attractive urban environment, a design competition will be launched. Once completed, the pedestrian zone will be on a solid legal basis, addressing previous legal issues. Cars and cyclists will be excluded from Friedrichstraße, making it a car-free zone.
