Berlin's New €20M Factory to Boost Green Chemistry Innovations

Berlin is set to become a major hub for research and innovation in sustainable chemistry, with the construction of the Chemical Invention Factory (CIF) in Berlin at TU Berlin's Charlottenburg campus. The CIF, scheduled for completion in 2027, will be a €20 million project funded by TU Berlin and the state of Berlin.

The CIF aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and market-ready products in the field of green materials chemistry. It will provide a state-of-the-art lab infrastructure for up to twelve international teams to develop their research results into viable commercial products. Each team will be supported by a professor serving as an 'InnoDirector'.

The facility will feature cutting-edge analysis equipment, accessible to all teams. It will also foster direct exchange between startups and catalysis experts from TU Berlin. The groundbreaking for the CIF took place on September 24, 2025, with the first project expected to begin in September 2025 under the guidance of an unnamed InnoDirector, lasting until at least 2029.

The CIF, with its completion in 2027, promises to significantly advance the transfer of innovations from science to green applications in materials chemistry. It will not only boost Berlin's role as a research hotspot but also contribute to the development of sustainable processes and materials across Europe.
