Berlin’s new *Schlossfreiheit* staircase to link Humboldt Forum and the Spree
Berlin’s riverside is set for a major upgrade with a new freestanding staircase named Schlossfreiheit. The project, funded by €6.4 million from the state and federal government, will connect the Humboldt Forum to the Spree. It marks one of several changes planned for the area, including landscaping and transport improvements.
Construction of the granite and sandstone staircase will start in mid-2021. The design includes a new landing stage and a direct descent from the museum complex to the river. Completion is expected by 2023.
Once finished, the Schlossfreiheit staircase will offer a new link between the city’s cultural hub and the river. The project reflects Berlin’s ongoing investment in public spaces, though full access to the Spree for swimming remains a future goal. Further updates on structural changes will determine when the river can safely open to bathers.
