Berlin's New Supercomputing Hub to Revolutionize Scientific Research
Berlin is set to get a new high-performance computing center focused on cutting-edge research. The facility will handle vast amounts of data, particularly for fields like materials and energy science. Operators promise fast, secure, and reliable processing for sensitive research projects. The project is a joint effort between the Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). The Max Delbrück Center is also involved, but no further scientific partners have been officially announced yet. Initially, the center will operate from an existing ZIB building before moving to a new site in Adlershof in the long term.
The center will specialise in high-performance computing and AI-driven research. It will be developed in stages, adapting to the needs of Berlin's scientific community. While only three core institutions are confirmed, additional academic and research partners will eventually gain access. Security and efficiency are key priorities. The facility will safeguard sensitive research data and maintain a robust IT infrastructure. Its design ensures quick and dependable processing for complex scientific workloads.
The new computing center will support advanced research in Berlin with a focus on speed, security, and scalability. The phased development allows flexibility as demand grows. For now, operations will begin in an existing ZIB location before transitioning to a dedicated facility in Adlershof.
