Berlin's Niemetzstraße reopening delayed until 2027 amid ongoing construction chaos

The reconstruction of Niemetzstraße in Berlin's Neukölln district faces further delays, with full reopening now expected by July 30, 2027. The ongoing work on a new railway overpass has kept the road closed, causing frustration among residents and increased traffic on nearby routes. Authorities are now considering a temporary pedestrian crossing to ease access for families and schoolchildren.

The bridge structure over Niemetzstraße is complete, but utility work and road construction continue. Berliner Wasserbetriebe is upgrading infrastructure around the site, with its portion of the project set to finish by December 18, 2026. After that, Stromnetz Berlin will begin laying cables in the same area.

Deutsche Bahn has scheduled the final roadwork to start in May 2027. Until then, the street will remain closed, forcing drivers to use Braunschweiger Straße as a detour. The prolonged closure has led to congestion and complaints from locals, particularly parents and children attending Löwenzahn Primary School.

In response, Neukölln district officials are reviewing plans for a temporary pedestrian crossing. This measure could help students reach school more safely and reduce evasion traffic on surrounding streets.

The road is expected to reopen by late July 2027, once all construction and road construction is finished. Until then, residents will rely on detours, while the proposed pedestrian crossing may provide some relief. The district office continues to assess solutions for easing local traffic pressures.
