Berlin's noisy Niemetzstraße overpass gets a quieter, modern rebuild by 2025

A major renovation of the Niemetzstraße train overpass in Berlin's Neukölln district is now underway. The project, set to run until late 2025, aims to replace an ageing bridge, reduce noise pollution and reconfigure nearby roads. Residents have faced rising noise levels in recent years, with nighttime measurements reaching 55–65 decibels.

The current temporary bridges over tracks 6045 and 6170 have led to increased noise for local residents. A 2023 study by Berlin's environmental authority recorded nighttime levels of 55–65 dB(A), while a Deutsche Bahn report confirmed a 5–8 dB rise due to heavier freight train traffic. The new bridge will address these issues with noise barriers and improved design.

The project includes a full rebuild of the Niemetzstraße overpass, with new abutments supported by bored piles and steel trough girders spanning 25.5 metres. The clearance height will increase to at least 4.5 metres, requiring the road to be lowered by up to 0.5 metres. Track 6170 will also shift northward to meet standard rail spacing.

Road closures and diversions will remain in place until the end of 2025. Once complete, the area will feature landscaping upgrades and permanent sound barriers along the rail lines.

The renovation follows a 2000 agreement on bridge dimensions and aims to cut noise for nearby homes. Motorists and residents will face disruptions until late 2025, but the finished structure will include improved noise protection and a redesigned road layout. Landscaping work will further enhance the surrounding area once construction ends.
