Berlin's old brewery depot transforms into a groundbreaking cultural cooperative hub

A former beverage warehouse in Berlin-Neukölln's Rollberg district is set to become a vibrant social and cultural hub. The Vollgut eG cooperative has secured a building permit to transform the old Kindl brewery depot into a mixed-use complex. Funding of over €50 million has already been raised for the ambitious project.

The Edith Maryon Foundation granted a 99-year hereditary building right for the land, ensuring its long-term community use. Vollgut eG, the cooperative behind the project, will oversee the conversion, though this marks their first major initiative of its kind in Berlin or elsewhere in Germany.

Construction will focus on preserving the existing structure while adopting resource-efficient methods. The goal is to create a dynamic space where future occupants—ranging from social institutions to creative businesses—will become cooperative members. Together, they will manage their spaces and contribute financially to keep costs affordable over time.

The completed complex will house a variety of facilities, including a daycare centre, a film school, a Korean market hall, and workshops for humanitarian organisations. Work is expected to continue until 2027, with the project aiming to foster collaboration between cultural, social, and economic initiatives under one roof.

Once finished, the Vollgut complex will serve as a model for community-driven development in Berlin. The cooperative structure ensures that occupants retain control over their spaces while maintaining affordability. With construction underway, the site is poised to become a key social security and project management landmark in Neukölln.
