Wegner 'infinitely grateful' for power supply - Berlin’s Power Restored After Deliberate Attack Exposes Grid Vulnerabilities

Berlin’s power supply was fully restored on Monday, January 6, 2026—well ahead of schedule—after a deliberate attack caused a major outage. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner publicly thanked emergency responders for their rapid work in repairing the damage. The incident has since raised concerns about the security of the city’s critical infrastructure.

The blackout began on Saturday, January 4, when a fire damaged high-voltage cables along the Teltow Canal in southwest Berlin. A left-wing extremist group known as Vulkangruppe later claimed responsibility in a letter that authorities have deemed credible.

During the crisis, task forces—including aid organisations, police, firefighters, Stromnetz Berlin, civil engineers, volunteers, the Bundeswehr, and federal police—worked to stabilise the grid. Their efforts allowed power to return a full day and a half earlier than initially projected. Wegner praised the coordinated response but stressed the need for stronger protections. He called for improved crisis management systems, highlighting vulnerabilities exposed by the attack. For now, the focus remains on ensuring a stable power supply while exploring temporary fixes.

The attack has prompted a review of Berlin’s infrastructure defences. Officials are examining ways to prevent similar disruptions in the future. Meanwhile, the city continues to rely on the emergency measures put in place during the outage.
