Berlin’s rail upgrades cut travel times but disrupt key routes

Berlin's railway network is set for significant improvements with the closure of Südkreuz station for two months and the opening of the new Dresden Railway. These changes promise reduced travel times and enhanced news connections.

From October 24 to December 12, Südkreuz station will be closed for regional and long-distance services to facilitate the installation of two new electronic signal boxes. This closure is part of a larger project that includes track expansion, aiming to cut travel time between Berlin and Dresden by ten minutes.

Starting mid-December, the Dresden Railway opening in Berlin will reduce travel time from the central station to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to just over 20 minutes. This upgrade completes the airport’s rail connection, benefiting Berliners and Brandenburg residents. Trains will now run south through Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz instead of the previous route via Gesundbrunnen and Ostkreuz.

However, some passengers may face longer journeys due to route changes and loss of direct news. Those from Gesundbrunnen, Spandau, and Falkensee might be affected. The new RE32 route from Oranienburg to BER will begin operation by DB Regio Nordost in February 2026, and the Airport Express (FEX) will run every 15 minutes instead of every 30 minutes. The RB24 from Eberswalde will be extended to BER, and the RE32 from Oranienburg will run hourly to BER, both passing through Ostkreuz.

The expansion allows for shared use of the route by S-Bahn, regional, and long-distance trains, replacing the previous route via the Anhalt Bahn. A new RE20 regional line will run from Lübbenau in the Spree Forest to BER and onward via Berlin’s central station starting with the timetable change.

The closure of Südkreuz station and the opening of the new Dresden Railway promise improved travel times and news connections in Berlin. While some passengers may face temporary inconveniences, the long-term benefits include enhanced rail links to the airport and better integration of different train services.
