Sign Against the Death Penalty: Red City Hall Lit Green - Berlin’s Red Town Hall Glows Green in Protest Against Death Penalty
Berlin once again took part in the Cities for Life – Cities Against the Death Penalty initiative on 30 November. The Red Town Hall’s windows glowed green, marking the city’s long-standing opposition to capital punishment. This annual event has been organised locally by the Community of Sant’Egidio since 2003.
The tradition began over two decades ago, with Berlin joining the global campaign in 2003. Each year, the city lights up a prominent building to signal its stance against executions. This time, the Red Town Hall was chosen as the symbolic location.
The green-lit Red Town Hall served as a visible reminder of Berlin’s position on human rights. By joining the initiative, the city reaffirmed its call for a global end to executions. The campaign continues to draw attention to the ongoing use of capital punishment in many countries.
