Berlin's S-Bahn expansion launches while highway projects stall amid delays
Berlin's transport network is expanding with two major projects now underway. The first section of the new S21 / S15 S-Bahn line opened on March 30, 2026, linking key areas in the city's north. Meanwhile, plans for the Tangential Connection East (TVO) and the A100 highway extension continue to face delays and rising costs.
The S21 / S15 line launched its initial 3.9-kilometre route, connecting Gesundbrunnen, Wedding, and the central Hauptbahnhof. This first phase marks the beginning of a long-term plan to create a north-south S-Bahn axis. Future extensions will run via Potsdamer Platz to Yorckstraße and eventually reach the Südring, though these sections are not expected until the mid-2030s.
The goal is to integrate the Hauptbahnhof with the Ringbahn, Nordring, and southern S-Bahn network, improving cross-city travel. Elsewhere, the TVO project—a four-lane expressway designed to ease traffic in southeastern Berlin—remains stalled. Planners submitted the approval application in late 2023, and public review took place in 2024. However, numerous objections have delayed progress, and no public hearing has been scheduled. Cost estimates have also climbed sharply, from an initial €351 million to as much as €632 million. The route aims to reduce congestion in Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Treptow-Köpenick but faces ongoing challenges. The 17th phase of the A100 highway extension, set to run from Treptower Park to Storkower Straße, has sparked debate due to its path through densely populated Friedrichshain. Since the last public hearing in 2025, no updates on political discussions or alternative routes have emerged.
The S21 / S15 line is now operational between Gesundbrunnen and Hauptbahnhof, offering a new north-south connection. Future phases will take decades to complete. The TVO and A100 projects, however, remain in limbo, with unresolved objections and escalating budgets. Both schemes aim to improve traffic flow but continue to face significant hurdles.
