Berlin’s Schools Tackle Flooding With Smart Rainwater Solutions
Berlin’s Lichtenberg district is taking steps to improve how rainwater is handled on school grounds. A new project will assess 24 school sites to prevent flooding and make the area more climate-resilient. The initiative also aims to cut long-term costs for the city’s water utility while raising awareness of sustainable water management.
The project focuses on managing rainwater directly on school properties. Instead of draining it away, schools will collect, reuse, or let it soak into the ground. Measures include installing rain barrels, setting up infiltration systems, and using collected water for irrigation.
The initiative will provide schools with clear plans to improve rainwater handling. Over time, these changes could lower costs for Berlin’s water services and make Lichtenberg better prepared for extreme weather. The project’s success may also encourage wider adoption of sustainable water practices across the city.
