Neukölln's Integration Officer Criticizes the SPD - Berlin’s SPD in turmoil as Neukölln mayor Martin Hikel quits race

Neukölln District Mayor Martin Hikel, a member of the SPD, has announced he will not seek re-election. His decision comes amidst internal party city tensions and criticism from Güner Balci, the district's integration commissioner.

Balci believes external influences, particularly state-level politics, have interfered in local SPD affairs, causing harm to both the party and its members. He specifically criticized a left-wing faction within Berlin's SPD for targeting Hikel.

Hikel's decision not to run again was also influenced by his previous bid for the party's lead candidate position. He received a significant 68.5% support during this bid, indicating his popularity within the party. However, it seems internal politics played a role in his decision to step down.

Balci noted Hikel's support for reporting centers to document cases of anti-Muslim hostility. He warned about potential risks, suggesting that some individuals with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood could be involved in running these centers and infiltrating local politics and government. Despite searches, no specific names of individuals with such ties have been found within Berlin's SPD or local government.

Martin Hikel's decision not to seek re-election highlights internal tensions within Berlin's SPD. Güner Balci's criticisms and warnings about external influences and potential infiltration add complexity to the situation. The SPD will now need to address these issues and prepare for the upcoming elections.
