Objection rejected: Spranger defends procedure - Berlin's Spranger Survives Censure Over Olympic Bid Costs
Berlin's Interior and Sports Senator, Iris Spranger (SPD), has weathered a censure motion over the city's potential Olympic and Paralympic Games bid. The motion was brought forth by Alliance 90/The Greens and The Left following Spranger's publication of the bid's actual costs before responding to their requests.
Spranger defended her actions, stating that she could not make prior publications or answers regarding a draft resolution that had not yet been decided by the Senate. She cited the business order of the Senate of Berlin, which mandates confidentiality until a decision is made on Senate drafts.
The Senator plans to use up to six million euros for the national bid from 2025 to 2027. This funding comes from the Berlin Senate, specifically from funds that were not spent for various reasons within the Berlin city budget. Spranger delayed submitting questions and report requests from the Greens and Left to the specialist committee regarding the bid.
Despite the censure motion, Spranger has continued her role as Senator. The up to six million euros earmarked for the bid will come from unspent funds, with the specific source being from the Berlin Senate's budget.
