Sternsinger visit Kai Wegner at the Berlin Town Hall - Berlin’s Star Singers bring blessings and a call to end child labor
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner welcomed a group of Star Singers at the Red Town Hall on the Feast of the Epiphany. Fifteen children from St. Mauritius Elementary School, dressed as the biblical Magi, visited the mayor’s office as part of their annual campaign. This year’s theme, ‘School, Not the Factory—Star Singing Against Child Labor’, highlights efforts to combat child exploitation worldwide.
The children arrived in traditional costumes, portraying Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They sang carols and received a tour of the town hall, including a stop at a Lego replica of the building. Wegner pointed out a bald Lego figure in the model, joking that it represented him.
During the visit, the Star Singers affixed their 2026 house blessing—a chalk inscription—above the door of Wegner’s office, the Senate meeting hall, and the Lego display. The mayor also contributed to their cause by placing a banknote in their donation box. The campaign is organised by Kindermissionswerk *Die Sternsinger and the Bund der Deutschen Katholischen Jugend (BDKJ). Last year, the Catholic relief initiative raised over €48 million nationwide. Wegner later noted that while child labour is not a pressing issue in Germany, the country could still improve children’s rights in its Basic Law.
The Star Singers’ visit marked the start of their 2026 campaign, blending tradition with advocacy. Their blessings now adorn key locations in Berlin’s Red Town Hall. The event also raised awareness for global efforts to replace child labour with education.
