Berlin’s Strausberger Platz gets a green makeover for climate resilience
Berlin's Strausberger Platz is set for a comprehensive redesign, aiming to boost green spaces and climate resilience. The iconic 'Floating Ring' fountain is currently undergoing renovation, with plans to have it fully operational by its 60th anniversary in 2027.
The redesign will focus on enhancing the square's green areas, incorporating climate-adapted plants that require minimal maintenance. New pathways and seating will also be introduced to improve usability and comfort.
The centrepiece of the square, the 'Floating Ring' fountain, has been dismantled for renovation. The fountain's mechanical room, water basin, and pumping system will be modernised and upgraded for energy efficiency. The restoration of the fountain's artwork, led by Achim Kühn, son of the original artist Fritz Kühn, ensures its historical significance is preserved. Meanwhile, the U-Bahn tunnel beneath the square will also receive renovation work.
The renovation and redesign of Strausberger Platz aim to create a more livable and climate-resilient space for Berliners and visitors alike. With the 'Floating Ring' fountain set to return by its 60th anniversary, the square's iconic status will be maintained while embracing modern sustainability practices.
