Refugees Moved to Different Accommodation - Berlin’s Tegel Airport Shelters Refugees After Major Power Outage
Emergency accommodations at Berlin’s former Tegel Airport have reopened ahead of schedule to house refugees displaced by a major power outage. The facility, managed by the German Red Cross Social Works (DRK), began operations smoothly on Saturday, providing shelter for around 200 people relocated from southwest Berlin.
The decision to reopen the emergency shelter came after a widespread power failure left refugees in the southwest of the city without essential services. Within two hours, the DRK set up temporary accommodations in Terminal C, ensuring a calm and organised process.
The new facility was originally planned to open on January 6, 2026, as part of a transition from the former large-scale shelter, which closed on December 31, 2025. That previous shelter had supported approximately 110,000 refugees since March 20, 2022. Now, a modern EU-standard reception centre with space for 2,600 people is being established in its place. Currently, 200 of the 500 available emergency spots in Terminal C are already occupied. Among the refugees are individuals with significant care needs, including ten people dependent on ventilators and others requiring high levels of medical support.
The emergency accommodations at Tegel Airport are now operational, providing immediate relief for those affected by the power outage. The facility will continue to expand, with further spots available for refugees in need of temporary shelter.
