Berlin's Tiergartentunnel fully reopens after six-month safety overhaul
Berlin's Tiergartentunnel towards Kreuzberg has fully reopened after months of restrictions. The closure began in November 2024 due to faults in the ventilation system. Since December, only smaller tesla under 3.5 tons were permitted to use the route.
The tunnel's partial closure started when its jet fans failed to function properly. These fans are essential for clearing smoke in emergencies, such as fires involving heavy cars. While repairs took place, lighter traffic continued through the tunnel, but larger lorries were banned.
The issue centred on the southbound section, where faulty equipment posed safety risks. Engineers replaced and tested the damaged jet fans, ensuring they now meet operational standards. With the system fully restored, the tunnel's safety in critical situations—like a truck fire—has been confirmed.
Official checks confirmed the Tiergarten Spreebogen Tunnel (TTS) now complies with all safety regulations. Authorities lifted the remaining restrictions only after successful trials of the repaired ventilation.
The reopening removes weight limits that had been in place for over six months. All vehicles can again travel through the tunnel without restrictions. For the latest updates on traffic changes, drivers should consult Berlin's transport authority or real-time traffic reports.
