Senator plans further adjustment of A100 traffic management - Berlin's Treptow Interchange Chaos: Senator Bonde Plans Second Car Lane on Temporary Bridge

Traffic chaos has plagued the Treptow interchange since the new A100 highway section opened in late August. The closure of the Elsen bridge over the Spree has exacerbated the situation, leading to increased traffic volume and misuse of bus lanes. Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) has announced plans to alleviate the congestion by adding a second car lane on the temporary bridge.

The new highway section has led to a significant increase in traffic volume. Many drivers are misusing the longer bus lane as a turn lane, further complicating the traffic situation. The Senate has attempted to address the issue by lengthening the bus lane and adjusting traffic light timings, but these measures have had little effect so far. BVG buses often run late and routes are frequently suspended due to the congestion on the bridge.

To tackle the problem, Senator Bonde plans to create a second car lane on the temporary bridge at the Treptow exit. This will involve combining the existing separate bike paths into one shared path for both directions, freeing up space for the additional car lane. Cyclists will still have a dedicated path, but it will be shared in both directions. Bonde expects this change to significantly improve traffic flow and enhance cyclist safety by rerouting them away from the construction site entrance and exit.

The addition of a second car lane on the temporary bridge at the Treptow exit is expected to bring significant relief to the traffic congestion. While this measure does not directly increase bus lanes or close lanes, it aims to quickly reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users. Senator Bonde's plan is a step towards addressing the traffic chaos that has erupted since the opening of the new highway section.
