Berlin's U2 Line to Close for Two Weeks for New Control System

Berlin's U-Bahn Line U2 will shut down for about two weeks from October 20 to November 2. Buses will replace trains during this period. The closure is necessary for the installation of a new electronic control system (ESTW) at Alexanderplatz, aiming to provide more stable operation and enable a four-minute interval starting in January.

The closure, scheduled during the Berlin autumn holidays to minimize disruption for passengers, will see six signal boxes on Line U2 modernized, including the Alexanderplatz upgrade. This upgrade is expected to improve signal reliability between Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and Spittelmarkt. The digitalization of the 35 signal boxes in the Berlin U-Bahn network is underway, with a dozen already digitized. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) is responsible for the modernization of the U-Bahn systems, but specific details about who is responsible for the signal system modernization on the U2 line during the closure are not provided.

During the closure, passengers should expect bus replacement services between Senefelderplatz and Stadtmitte. The upgrade aims to enhance the stability and frequency of the U2 line, benefiting passengers in the long run.
