Berlin University Alliance Remains at Excellence Level - Berlin's University Alliance secures seven more years of elite research funding
Berlin's University Alliance (BUA) has secured another seven years of funding under Germany's Excellence Strategy. The decision, confirmed on March 11, 2026, follows a positive evaluation by a panel of researchers and approval from federal and state science ministers. This renewal will extend support for the consortium from January 1, 2027, to 2033.
The BUA was established in 2019 as Germany's first cross-university consortium under the Excellence Strategy. It brings together Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Over the years, its collaborative approach has earned international recognition as the 'Berlin Model' for academic excellence.
The latest funding decision was welcomed by Berlin's political leaders. Governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) described it as a boost for the city's reputation in higher education and research. Science senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) called the outcome a strong endorsement of Berlin's standing as a leading science hub. As one of nine Universities of Excellence, the BUA has set new standards for inter-university cooperation. Plans for the 2027–2033 funding phase include expanding international partnerships, though specific projects with global top universities have yet to be announced.
The extended funding ensures the BUA's continued role in advancing research and education in Berlin. With four major institutions working together, the alliance will maintain its focus on innovation and collaboration. The decision also reinforces the city's position as a key player in Germany's academic landscape.
