Berlin's Urban Revamp: Potsdamer Platz Leads Climate-Resilient Greening
Berlin is transforming its urban landscape, focusing on Potsdamer Platz. The city is breaking up sealed areas, planting more trees, and managing rainwater at the surface to increase climate resilience and urban livability.
Potsdam is leading the de-sealing efforts in inner-city areas and residential neighborhoods. The former Sony Center has been revamped, now boasting a greener space with trees and a fountain. Marlene-Dietrich-Platz is set to become a year-round attractive public space with new seating areas and a large rain garden. A new food hall has opened in the former CineStar IMAX on Potsdamer Platz. Mitte district plans to install special infiltration trenches around suitable manholes. Berlin is implementing the sponge city principle in many districts, including de-sealing school and kindergarten courtyards. The transformation involves greening, de-sealing, and innovative use ideas. Frankfurt is also upgrading riverbanks and squares along the Main, integrating rainwater management and pocket parks.
These transformations aim to enhance climate resilience, biodiversity, water management, and quality of life. Construction phases are planned from 2020 to 2032, with projects like the Spreepark and Döberitzer Grünzug already underway.
