Berlin to expand rail and flight routes for the East - Berlin’s Wegner takes helm of eastern Germany’s economic revival push

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has taken over as leader of the Conference of Eastern German State Premiers. The handover took place symbolically from Thuringia’s State Premier Mario Voigt, marking a shift in regional leadership. Wegner now sets the agenda for the next twelve months, with a focus on economic growth and infrastructure.

Wegner’s first priority is ensuring federal special funds reach eastern Germany effectively. He called for closer monitoring of investments to guarantee fair distribution across the region. During his term, Berlin will push for better rail and air links, addressing long-standing transport gaps.

Wegner’s leadership will focus on transport upgrades, job creation, and securing major events for eastern Germany. His plans include leveraging Berlin’s Olympic ambitions and expanding air travel options. The coming year will test whether these efforts translate into tangible economic benefits for the region.
