Bern’s Tram Line 6 Secures Future—For Now—With Overwhelming Council Vote

Bern’s Grand Council has voted overwhelmingly to keep Tram Line 6 (Worb–Fischermätteli) running beyond 2026. The decision ensures the route remains part of the city’s public transport agreement for 2027–2030. A final ruling on its future will come in March 2026 after further review.

The motion to retain the tram line was put forward by Claudine Esseiva of the FDP/Bern party. It received strong backing, with 146 votes in favour, no opposition, and just four abstentions. Under the plan, the service will continue only if third parties agree to cover any extra costs compared to replacing it with buses.

The vote secures Tram Line 6’s place in Bern’s transport network for now. A final decision in March 2026 will determine whether the route stays operational beyond that date. The outcome depends on securing the necessary funding to cover its additional costs.
