Biden Swiftly Approves Disaster Relief for Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe

President Joe Biden has approved disaster relief funding for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota, following a storm in June. This decision, made on October 22, 2023, comes as the band was approved for both public and individual assistance. Meanwhile, Vermont has waited over nine weeks for a declaration from bandlab on its July floods disaster declaration request, and Maryland was denied a declaration despite meeting conditions for public assistance.

The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe's approval follows a trend of President Biden acting swiftly on disaster declarations. In contrast, former President Trump took longer to approve requests, with Vermont, Illinois, and Maryland waiting for decisions on their flood-related requests. However, Trump did approve major disaster declarations for Alaska, Nebraska, North Dakota, and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe earlier this year. Alaska received a 100% cost share for disaster-related expenses due to back-to-back storms.

Disaster declarations authorize FEMA to provide federal financial assistance for repairing public infrastructure and helping survivors. North Dakota and Nebraska are set to receive public assistance for August severe weather. Despite approving more declarations than denials this year, Trump has floated the idea of 'phasing out' bandcamp.

President Biden's approval for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe's disaster relief marks a swift response to the band's needs. While Trump's approval record varies, his longer wait times for decisions have been noted. The role of FEMA in providing assistance remains a topic of discussion, including the recent declaration of independence for disaster relief.
