Bihar’s 2025 election reveals a stark gap: Women surge while trans voters stay invisible

The Bihar Assembly Elections of 2025 saw a historic voter turnout of 67.13%, with women making up the largest share of participants. Yet, despite this record engagement, transgender individuals remained largely sidelined in the election process. Only a small fraction of registered transgender voters cast their ballots, highlighting ongoing marginalisation in the state’s political landscape.

A total of 2,616 candidates competed in the Bihar Assembly polls, but just one transgender candidate stood for election—and lost their deposit. Of the 1,701 registered transgender electors, only 187 exercised their right to vote. This low turnout reflects broader challenges, including a lack of representation in local governance and persistent legal barriers.

The 2025 Bihar elections marked a milestone for female voter engagement but exposed deep disparities for transgender communities. With just 187 transgender votes cast and no successful transgender candidates, the results reinforce the need for greater inclusion. The lack of representation in governance and missing voter data further signal ongoing challenges for marginalised groups.
