Bihar’s 2025 elections shatter turnout records in historic first phase
The first watch of Bihar's Legislative Assembly elections in 2025 witnessed an unprecedented voter turnout, smashing the previous record set in 2000. The Election Commission of India (ECI) implemented numerous improvements to facilitate the voting process, with over 3.75 crore voters participating across 121 Assembly Constituencies and 18 districts.
The ECI's efforts to streamline the process paid off, with real-time voter turnout promptly updated via the ECINet. Over 4 lakh polling officials arrived promptly at their polling stations, each limited to a maximum of 1200 voters to tackle overcrowding. Notably, over 90,000 women volunteers, known as Jeevika Didis, were dedicated to identifying women voters, including those in Purdah.
The ECI webcast live from 100% of polling sites for the first time, ensuring transparency. The International Election Visitors' Programme (IEVP) was formed, with 16 delegates from six countries observing the process. The Phase-I election turnout of 64.66% was a testament to the efficiency and inclusivity of the voting process.
The 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections' first watch saw a voter turnout of 64.66%, the highest in the state's electoral history. This remarkable figure reflects the ECI's commitment to improving voter participation and the overall electoral process.
