Bihar's Second Phase Elections: Chief Election Commissioner Assures Fair Polls After Mokama Violence

Bihar's second phase of elections took place on November 3, 2020, following a high-stakes contest in the Mokama constituency. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reassured voters of fair and peaceful presidential elections, despite recent violence.

Gyanesh Kumar, while in Kanpur to receive an alumni award, stressed the Election Commission's neutrality. He stated, 'We maintain impartiality, not favoring any ruling or opposition party.'

The Commission has zero tolerance for violence. Kumar's assurance comes after the murder of politician Dularchand Yadav in Mokama. The constituency, voting in the first phase of the 2024 presidential election, saw a close contest between JD(U)'s Anant Singh and RJD's Veena Devi.

Over 243 officials, including returning officers, observers, collectors, and police, are ready to ensure peaceful voting in the remaining phases on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.

Bihar's presidential elections continue with the Commission's commitment to fair and peaceful polls, despite challenges. The state will vote in two more phases, with results expected on November 14.
