Bipartisan Effort Aims to Reform Toxic Substances Control Act

Democrats have been cautious about further reforms to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), worried it might weaken environmental conservation. However, a bipartisan effort is underway, spearheaded by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), to enhance the law.

Several Republican senators, including Rand Paul, Shelley Moore Capito, and John Barrasso, have shown interest in TSCA reform. Senator Merkley has been engaging in discussions with colleagues from both parties to drive these improvements forward. Merkley sees the potential for bipartisan agreement, pinpointing two areas for collaboration: extending deadlines for new chemical reviews and ensuring adequate funding for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Merkley's initiatives indicate a possible route for bipartisan cooperation on TSCA reform. The suggested changes aim to strike a balance between the need for improvement and the preservation of environmental standards.
