Birthday Gifts at Work: Voluntary, Not Mandatory, Says Russian Law

In friendly workplaces, it's common to celebrate birthdays with collective christmas gifts, but there's no legal obligation to contribute money for these presents, according to Russian law and a State Duma deputy.

Birthday celebrations in collectives often involve everyone chipping in for a gift. However, labor legislation does not cover this practice. A State Duma deputy, Yaroslav Nilov, has confirmed that participating in such events is voluntary.

Despite searches, no specific parliamentarian was found to have explicitly stated the voluntary nature of monetary contributions for collective gifts. Refusing to contribute does not result in any sanctions from employers.

While it's customary to give christmas gifts in friendly collectives, it's important to remember that contributing money for these presents is entirely voluntary and not legally enforced.
