Bissingen’s Waldschule Leads ‘School as a Safe Place’ Security Initiative

The city council has launched the 'School as a Safe Place' initiative, with the Waldschule Gemeinschaftsschule Bissingen set to pioneer the project from April 2, 2025. The scheme aims to enhance school security through structural, technical, and pedagogical measures.

Initially, schools deemed most urgent will participate, along with those offering suitable pedagogical programs. Two structural-technical measures are being trialled: fitting 14 schools with lock cylinders featuring a turn knob on doors and enhancing outdoor signage at the same 14 institutions. This pilot phase carries an estimated cost of 147,400 euros.

Preventive-pedagogical measures are also underway. Teacher training in violence prevention programs is commencing at 21 schools, while all third graders will receive lessons on preventing sexualised violence. These measures, along with the structural improvements, are set to cost around 258,600 euros in total. The effectiveness of these measures will be assessed annually to refine the concept further.

The 'School as a Safe Place' initiative is a comprehensive approach to school security, combining structural improvements with preventive education. The Waldschule Gemeinschaftsschule Bissingen will lead the way, with the project set to roll out across other schools based on evaluation results.
