Bitkom Welcomes EU Eco-design Regulation for Durable, Repairable IT Devices
Bitkom, Germany's digital association, has welcomed the incoming EU Eco-design regulation and labels for durability and repairability, set to take effect on June 20, 2025. The organisation also calls for a reduction in value-added tax on IT device spare parts and repair services to encourage a circular economy.
The new regulations aim to increase transparency and sustainability in the IT industry. From 2025, consumers can expect clear labels indicating the durability and repairability of their devices. This move aligns with the wishes of 82% of consumers surveyed by Bitkom, who support such labels.
Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder has shown support for these regulations. He believes they will promote greater sustainability in the digital world. The organisation itself has long advocated for a more circular economy, calling for a reduction in VAT on spare parts and repair services to encourage recycling and reuse.
The incoming EU Eco-design regulation and labels will provide consumers with valuable information about their devices' durability and repairability. Bitkom's support for these changes, along with their call for VAT reduction on related services, signals a push towards a more sustainable and circular digital landscape.
