BJP Faces First Test in Odisha: Nuapada Byelection on November 11

A byelection is set for Nuapada, Odisha, on November 11, following the recent passing of its MLA, Rajendra Dholakia. This election is significant for several reasons, not least because it's the first electoral challenge for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since they took power in Odisha last year.

The BJP has nominated Jay Dholakia, son of the late MLA, as their candidate. This move has upset the plans of the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD), who had hoped to field Jay and campaign with their party chief, Naveen Patnaik. The BJP's decision to poach the sitting legislator's son has caused internal disquiet within the party, and they will need to present a united front in the election.

The Nuapada bypoll is also a test of popularity and credibility for the incumbent Majhi government. Ghasiram Majhi, a former Congressman and strong contender in the last election, is once again in the running. The Congress party also has a stake in the election, as the constituency is in the home area of their state committee chief, Bhakta Charan Das. Historically, Nuapada has chosen between the Dholakia family and the BJP's Basanta Panda in previous elections.

The Nuapada byelection is shaping up to be a significant contest, with the BJP facing internal challenges and the Majhi government's popularity on the line. The election, scheduled for November 11, will provide the first real test of the BJP's strength since they came to power in Odisha last year.
