BJP Secures Landslide Win in Bihar’s Contentious 2024 Election

Bihar's election results are in, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP securing a landslide victory. The ruling coalition has expanded its majority in the state assembly, winning 171 seats between the BJP and its key regional partner, the Janata Dal (United). However, the election was marred by controversy over voter rolls, with Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi alleging unfairness due to irregularities.

Voter turnout in Bihar elections exceeded 67%, despite controversy surrounding the voter rolls. A total of 6.5 million names were removed due to deaths, voter migration, and duplicate entries, overshadowing the election campaign. Prime Minister Modi celebrated the victory on social media, calling it 'historic and unprecedented'. The BJP and its allies are set to secure a two-thirds supermajority in the 243-seat assembly, with results still pending in seven constituencies. Bihar, one of India’s poorest states with over 74 million eligible voters, saw key campaign issues including unemployment and economic development.

Nitish Kumar, leader of the Janata Dal (United), will remain the state's Chief Minister, as his party continues the coalition with the BJP.

The BJP's victory in Bihar strengthens its position in the state, with a significant majority in the legislative assembly. However, allegations of unfairness in the election process by the Opposition may cast a shadow over the results. The coalition's focus will now shift to addressing the key campaign issues of unemployment and economic development in one of India's poorest states.
